ROD.

Last seen on: Metro Quick Wednesday, 17 May 2023

Random information on the term “ROD”:

Birching is a form of corporal punishment with a birch rod, typically applied to the recipient’s bare buttocks, although occasionally to the back and/or shoulders.

A birch rod (often shortened to “birch”) is a bundle of leafless twigs bound together to form an implement for administering corporal punishment.

Contrary to what the name suggests, a birch rod is not a single rod and is not necessarily made from birch twigs, but can also be made from various other strong and smooth branches of trees or shrubs, such as willow. A hazel rod is particularly painful; a bundle of four or five hazel twigs was used in the 1960s and 1970s on the Isle of Man, the last jurisdiction in Europe to use birching as a judicial penalty.

Another factor in the severity of a birch rod is its size—i.e. its length, weight and number of branches. In some penal institutions, several versions were in use, which were often given names. For example, in Dartmoor Prison the device used to punish male offenders above the age of 16—weighing some 16 ounces (450 g), and 48 inches (1.2 m) long—was known as the senior birch.[when?]

ATOLL.

Last seen on: Metro Quick Wednesday, 17 May 2023

Random information on the term “ATOLL”:

The Maldives are formed by 20 natural atolls, along with a few islands and isolated reefs today which form a pattern stretching from 7 degrees 10′ North to 0 degrees 45′ South. The largest of these atolls is Boduthiladhunmathi, while the atoll containing the most islands is Huvadhu.

Some atolls are in the form of a number of islands by time and in the form of isolated reefs, which could be classified as smaller atoll formations. All land above the surface in the Maldives is of coralline origin. The atolls of the Maldives form a quite regular chain and, especially in the northern and central atolls, an arrayed structure is apparent. There are broad and deep channels in between some atolls. The origin of the word “atoll” itself is in the language of the Maldives. “Atoll” (from Dhivehi: atholhu) is now used in many languages worldwide.

Traditionally, Maldivians call the atolls ending in ‘-madulu’ or ‘-mathi’ by their name without adding the word “Atoll” at the end. For example, it is correct to write simply Kolhumadulhu, without adding the word ‘Atholhu’ at the end. This is also the case in the atoll known as Faadhippolhu.

HASSLE.

Last seen on: Metro Quick Wednesday, 17 May 2023

Random information on the term “HASSLE”:

In bioinformatics, BLAST (basic local alignment search tool) is an algorithm and program for comparing primary biological sequence information, such as the amino-acid sequences of proteins or the nucleotides of DNA and/or RNA sequences. A BLAST search enables a researcher to compare a subject protein or nucleotide sequence (called a query) with a library or database of sequences, and identify database sequences that resemble alphabet above a certain threshold. For example, following the discovery of a previously unknown gene in the mouse, a scientist will typically perform a BLAST search of the human genome to see if humans carry a similar gene; BLAST will identify sequences in the human genome that resemble the mouse gene based on similarity of sequence.

BLAST, which The New York Times called the Google of biological research, is one of the most widely used bioinformatics programs for sequence searching. It addresses a fundamental problem in bioinformatics research. The heuristic algorithm it uses is much faster than other approaches, such as calculating an optimal alignment. This emphasis on speed is vital to making the algorithm practical on the huge genome databases currently available, although subsequent algorithms can be even faster.

AMEN.

Last seen on: Metro Quick Wednesday, 17 May 2023

Random information on the term “AMEN”:

Selah (/ˈsiːlə(h)/; Biblical Hebrew: סֶלָה, romanized: selā) is a word used 74 times in the Hebrew Bible. Its etymology and precise meaning are unknown, though various interpretations are given.

It is probably either a liturgical-musical mark or an instruction on the reading of the text, with the meaning of “stop and listen.” Another proposal is that selah can be used to indicate that there is to be a musical interlude at that point in the Psalm. It can also be interpreted as a form of underlining in preparation for the next paragraph.

It should not be confused with the Hebrew word sela’ (סֶלַע) meaning “rock”.

This word occurs 71 times in 39 of the Psalms, and three times in Habakkuk 3: altogether 74 times in the Bible. It is found at the end of Psalms 3, 24, and 46, and in most other cases at the end of a verse, the exceptions being Psalms 55:19, 57:3, and Habakkuk 3:3, 9, 13.

At least some of the Psalms were sung accompanied by musical instruments and there are references to this in many chapters. Thirty-one of the thirty-nine psalms with the caption “To the choir-master” include the word selah.

ALE.

Last seen on: Metro Quick Wednesday, 17 May 2023

Random information on the term “ALE”:

Ale is the eighth studio album by Italian singer Alexia released in 2008. The album is the first release on the Edel label after Alexia left Sony Music in 2007 and was the first studio album Alexia had released since 2004’s Gli occhi grandi della luna. The album was released in Italy on CD on 27 June 2008 and for digital download the next day. A version which included the song Biancaneve was released in Europe on 24 July 2009.

Two singles were released from the album: “Grande coraggio” which had two videos filmed, one of which contained clips of Alexia in the studio recording the album and at the album photoshoot which was used to promote both album and single; “Guardarti dentro” was the second single and as it was just a one track digital release which did not differ from the album, no separate download track was issued. Initially “Estate” was planned to be the first single from the album.

In 2009, Alexia re-released the ‘Ale’ album with different tracks and recordings under the name Ale & C. Four of the tracks carried through from Ale, most notably the two singles “Grande corraggio” and “Guardarti dentro”. Two completely new songs were added; “Bianacneve” which was a duet with Mario Lavezzi and “Il mio mondo” (a cover of the song by Umberto Bindi). The tracks “Il branco” and “Un attimo nell’infinito” were re-recorded in English as “We Is the Power” and “Nowhere” respectively, with “We Is the Power” becoming a duet with Bloom06. “E non sai” was re-recorded as a duet with Madame SiSi and released as a single and “Mio padre” (My Father) was re-recorded with Alexia’s sister Annamaria Aquilani. The album was released on February 20, 2009 (a day after the release of Sony’s second Alexia budget compilation Collections) and reached number 69 in the Italian charts.
