The first ascent was on 17 January 1948, by members of Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE). The name was first used in 1949 by William Latady, aerial photographer with RARE.

ITEM.

Last seen on: Metro Quick Friday, March 31, 2023

Random information on the term “ITEM”:

The ITEM Club is an economic forecasting group based in the United Kingdom. ITEM stands for Independent Treasury Economic Model. It was founded in 1977 to produce quarterly economic UK forecasts, which are often mentioned in the UK news media. It is sponsored by EY (Ernst & Young), a firm of business and financial advisers, and was officially named The EY ITEM Club in 2012. It is said[by whom?] to be independent of any political, academic or commercial bias despite corporate sponsorship.

The UK model is used by HM Treasury for its policy analysis and biannual Industry Act forecasts for the Budget. This enables ITEM to explore the implications and unpublished assumptions behind Government forecasts and policy measures. ITEM can test whether Government claims are consistent and can assess which forecasts are credible and which are not.

Dr. Howard Archer is the EY ITEM Club’s chief economic adviser, taking over from Professor Peter Spencer in June 2017. Archer joined the EY Item Club after nearly 17 years as Chief UK and European Economist at IHS Global Insight.

FACET.

Last seen on: Metro Quick Friday, March 31, 2023

Random information on the term “FACET”:

Accelerator physics is a branch of applied physics, concerned with designing, building and operating particle accelerators. As such, it can be described as the study of motion, manipulation and observation of relativistic charged particle beams and their interaction with accelerator structures by electromagnetic fields.

It is also related to other fields:

The experiments conducted with particle accelerators are not regarded as part of accelerator physics, but belong (according to the objectives of the experiments) to, e.g., particle physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics or materials physics. The types of experiments done at a particular accelerator facility are determined by characteristics of the generated particle beam such as average energy, particle type, intensity, and dimensions.

While it is possible to accelerate charged particles using electrostatic fields, like in a Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier, this method has limits given by electrical breakdown at high voltages. Furthermore, due to electrostatic fields being conservative, the maximum voltage limits the kinetic energy that is applicable to the particles.
