Random information on the term “Bit”:

The shannon (symbol: Sh) is a unit of information named after Claude Shannon, the founder of information theory. One shannon is defined by IEC 80000-13 as the information content of a single binary symbol (two possible states, say “0” and “1”) when the a priori probability of either state is .mw-parser-output .sfrac{white-space:nowrap}.mw-parser-output .sfrac.tion,.mw-parser-output .sfrac .tion{display:inline-block;vertical-align:-0.5em;font-size:85%;text-align:center}.mw-parser-output .sfrac .num,.mw-parser-output .sfrac .den{display:block;line-height:1em;margin:0 0.1em}.mw-parser-output .sfrac .den{border-top:1px solid}.mw-parser-output .sr-only{border:0;clip:rect(0,0,0,0);height:1px;margin:-1px;overflow:hidden;padding:0;position:absolute;width:1px}1/2. It is understood as such within the realm of information theory, and is conceptually distinct from the bit, a term used in data processing and storage to denote a single instance of a binary signal which (according to information theory) may contain up to 1 shannon of information. A set of N such symbols (such as contained in computer memory or a binary data transmission) is properly described as consisting of N bits. But the actual information content of those N symbols is typically less than N shannons due to redundancy (or informally, under-utilization of the information transmission or storage system).

Random information on the term “IOTA”:

Latin iota (majuscule: Ɩ, minuscule: ɩ) is a letter of the Latin alphabet, based on the lowercase of the Greek letter iota (ι).

It was formerly used in the International Phonetic Alphabet to represent [ɪ] (the vowel in English “bit”). It was replaced by a small capital I (ɪ) in 1989, but it can still be found in use in some later works. Other variations are used for phonetic transcription: ᵼ ι.

Ɩ has been adopted as a letter in the alphabets of some African languages, such as Gurunɛ, Kabiyé or Mossi. Its capital form has a hook to distinguish it from capital I. The dotted or accented italic form ɩ is very often indistinguishable from the italic letter small I i in serif fonts.
